This is a 1st pattern US Model 1910 meat can pouch used during World War I. These were used to carry what came to be known as the mess kit. The 1st pattern was not configured with the three sleeves used to store one knife, fork and spoon each. The only other component carried in the pouch was the "meat can" itself. These were attached to the top of the haversack by means of two leather laces that passed through five eyelets on the back of the pouch and corresponding eyelets of the haversack. The Model 1910 meat can pouch uses a rimless eagle snap button to secure it closed. This one is not maker marked, but is unit marked. The unit marking reads 8/Crossed Cannons/VA. I have not been able to find any information on this unit. There is also an equipment tag pinned to the outer flap. It is for an artillery unit, and is marked MGAA40. This meat can pouch is in very good condition, and will go well with your other WWI Model 1910 field gear.
