This is a Civil War dated letter from near Alexandria, Virginia dated 29 March, 1862. It is written by a Private John B Bell and addressed to someone named Robert. Private Bell was a member of Company A, 85th Pennsylvania Infantry Regiment. The subject of the letter is about the unit moving from Meridian Hill in Washington D.C. into Virginia. They crossed the long bridge and came within 1/2 a mile of Alexandria where the slept on the ground without tents on the 28th of March. The following morning they moved into a new camp and pitched tents. He tells of being sent with Sergeant (1SG) Acheson, Private Joe McCabe and Private Jacob Thompson to take possession of the new area where the company was to camp, ensuring no other unit occupied their area. He also states the land owners displeasure about their being on his property. He also talks about going on board a schooner to the mouth of the Potomac River, then board a larger ship. This is the beginning of McClellan's failed Peninsula Campaign of 1862. The letter is in amazing condition for being 161 years old. As long as you're old enough to know how to read cursive writing it's very easy to follow along with. This will make an interesting addition to your Civil War letter collection.
