This is the photo album of Captain George Coneo of the 21st Field Hospital. The 21st Field Hospital provided all available medical services in the China, Burma, India theater of operations during WWII. The unit was formed and trained at Camp White, Oregon from November, 1942 to June, 1943. The three platoons that made up the 21st Field Hospital boarded trains on 14 June, 1943 headed for Camp Shanks, New York. The unit arrived in New York on 19 June, 1943 and boarded the USS West Point on 10 July, 1943 headed for China. Traveling by troop ship, river boats, C-47's and trucks, the unit finally reached Paoshan, China on 30 November, 1943. The three platoons separated and occupied three different locations. The headquarters platoon was located at Paoshan on an old Flying Tigers base and the other two were off the Burma Road. Captain Coneo was located with the headquarters platoon, as he was a dental officer. There are a little over 1100 images in the album, all black and white. The show the unit and most of the same personnel that Captain Coneo worked with from Camp White, Oregon, to troop ship convoys, river boats. waiting and flying on military aircraft to camp life in China. Most of the images are on cardboard backers, maybe 20 or so are loose. The front and back covers of the album are wood, with the front cover having a hammered copper image on it. It shows a tent scene with "HOME" China 1943-44-45 Captain George Coneo on it. This photo album of Captain Coneo's shows what life was like in the CBI theater, good for most of the time and not so good on occasion. At one time I suspect it was held together with twine or some other type material, but in it's current state is separated. I have not been able to find any information on the Captain, but the 21st Field Hospital has quite a bit of information available on line. This will make a nice addition to any China Burma India collection.
