This is a US Model 1918 private purchase uniform worn by the US Army during World War I. This 1918 tunic was made by the A.B. Kirschbaum Company, as shown by the clothing label sewn in the left inner pocket. It features the four pocket design with epaulets. The five button coat has the subdued US eagle buttons, with six smaller buttons of the same type for the pockets and epaulets. The coat size buttons have several different back marks. The smaller buttons are all back marked "CITY BUTTON WORKS N.Y.". The coat is fully lined and has one inner pocket on the left breast. There are no stamped or hand written names anywhere inside the tunic. The left sleeve has a Tank Corps patch sewn on. A red discharge stripe is sewn on below the triangular yellow, red and blue Tank Corps patch. Above the left sleeve cuff are two gold chevrons of bullion, indicating one year of overseas service. There are no chevrons sewn onto the right sleeve. A white diamond shaped backing, with a thin black diamond shaped inner border surrounding a black Ace of Spades insignia is securely sewn on the right sleeve just below the shoulder seam. This rare patch represents the 1st platoon, C Company of either the 344th or 345th tank battalion. These two battalions made up the 1st Tank Brigade of the Armor Corps, commanded by George S. Patton Jr. The left side of the collar has the 2nd Pattern Tank Corps collar brass, depicting a Mark VIII tanks sitting on two fire breathing dragons over a laurel wreath. The right collar has the US collar disc. There is no insect damage showing anywhere on the tunic, there are no rips, tears or stains found on the tunic either. This is a fantastic example of a US Model 1918 uniform Armor Corps tunic with a very rare unit patch. It displays well on a mannequin and will look great in any war room!
