This is an issue of Frank Leslie's Illustrated Newspaper, a newspaper that was established in 1855 and continued in circulation until 1922. This edition is marked as No. 289, Volume XII and dated June 1, 1861. The complete newspaper is 16 pages, including advertisements. There are numerous articles throughout the paper that relate to the war, both in the eastern and western theaters. The most notable article covers the murder of Colonel Ellsworth, commander of the New York Fire Zouaves. Ellsworth was killed in Alexandria, Virginia at the Marshall House Hotel by the owner of the hotel, James W. Jackson. Jackson shot and killed Colonel Ellsworth removed the Confederate national flag that was being flown from the hotel. The paper is in very good condition, showing no damage at all. The pages are slightly yellowed, but all text is perfectly legible. This would go great with your civil War document or newspaper collection.
