This is a Model 1706 German Army "Scharnhorst" Field Marshall series officer's saber manufactured by the premier maker Carl Eickhorn of Solingen, Germany. The sword measures 36" overall, with a blade length of 31". The blade is slightly curved with a narrow, flat back that measures 3/4" at the ricasso. It is a single edged blade with an integral fuller that measures 19 1/4". The blade is in almost mint condition and is free of nicks or any other damage. The original plating is still present, giving the entire blade a mirror like finish. The reverse ricasso is stamped with the ORIGINAL EICKHORN and squirrel logo and is very visible. The obverse ricasso is not stamped. The blade has not been sharpened. The gilded hilt has a beautiful mellow golden patina, and shows wear only along the back strap. The highly detailed leopard's head pommel with garnet eyes, raised oak leaf embellished knuckle bow, back strap, ferrule and cross guard are representative of the craftmanship exhibit in Eickhorn blades. The obverse langet has a very detailed Wehrmacht National emblem, the reverse langet has a plain military style shield on it. The original leather washer is present and the blade is very tight to the hilt. The black celluloid covered grip is the only flaw with this sword. A small section on the reverse side is missing between the wire wrap and the pommel. The triple twisted silver wire is tight to the grip. The silver and gray officer's Portepee is in very good condition. The original steel scabbard is dent free. The scabbard retains the majority of the original black enamel finish, showing only minor scuffs and scrapes from parade use. The drag is integral and shows very minimal wear, as does the single mount and suspension ring. Overall this is a beautiful example of a WWII German Army officer's saber that will compliment any WWII German Army collection.
