This is a Model 1851 sword belt rig from the Indian Wars period. The black tooled leather belt measures 46" long and 1 3/4" wide. The short sword drop measures 13 1/2" long including the snap swivel, while the long drop is 28 1/2" long including the swivel. The leather is in very good condition, and while it shows plenty of wear from use it is still very pliable and strong. There is very little crazing, no tears, splits or holes in the leather anywhere. The stitching is still very strong and unbroken. The two sword drops are very strong and would still support the weight of a saber. The pistol cartridge box is in very good condition as well. There is no visible makers mark or inspector cartouche. The only flaw the box has is the leather latching tab. It is not broken, but is now stuck to the brass closure finial. The new owner can take a chance trying to get it open, I'm afraid it will break when I try! The 1851 Sword belt plate is the officer's type with the applied silver wreath. The plate and keeper are both bench marked, but do not match. The plate is marked 159 and the keeper is stamped 495. This old Model 51 sword belt rig would go well with any Indian War display, specially on a mannequin.
