This is a US Cavalry feed bag used during World War I. These bags were designed to be used with horses as well as mules. There were three variants of the M1912 feed bag, this is the later of the three, with the squared off bottom. The other two earlier types had rounded bottoms. This particular feed bag was manufactured by the Canvas Products Company in March of 1918. It is in complete, unissued condition and has only a couple of small stains on the exterior. All straps are still present and are in very good condition. The U.S. stencil on the bottom is very clear and crisp. The inside of the flap is stenciled CANVAS PRODUCTS/CO./MAR./1918. These were made to be tied onto the M1904 McClellan saddles, that's the purpose of the leather straps, and be readily accessible so the mount could be fed quickly. If you have a WWI Cavalry collection you need one of these to make it complete, and it's going to be hard to improve on this one!
