WWII German Naval Officers Sword Alex Coppel

This is a World War II German Navy officer's saber manufactured by the rare maker Alexander Coppel of Solingen, Germany. The sword measures 38 3/4" overall, with a blade length of 33 1/2". The blade is slightly curved with a narrow, flat back that measures 13/16" at the ricasso. It is a plain single edged piped back blade. The blade is in very good condition and has a a few very small nicks along the edge that are felt more than seen. The original plating is still present, with only a small small spots of oxidation present. The reverse ricasso is stamped with the makers mark of Alexander Coppel, ALCOSO in an arc over a set of scales with the letters A C over them and SOLINGEN below the scales. For some reason the stamp is a double strike. The obverse ricasso is not stamped. The blade has not been sharpened. The gilded hilt has a beautiful golden patina, and shows minimal wear. The highly detailed lion's head pommel with raised oak leaf embellished knuckle bow, back strap, ferrule and cross guard are representative of the craftmanship exhibited in Coppel blades. The obverse folding guard has a very detailed fouled anchor emblem, the reverse folding guard is stamped with an eagle clutching a swastika over the letter M and the serial number N2590. This guard serves as a lock when the sword is in the scabbard as it fits over a post in the upper scabbard mount. The original red felt washer is present and the blade is very tight to the hilt. The white celluloid covered grip is the only flaw with this sword. A small section on the reverse side is missing between the wire wrap and the pommel. The triple twisted gold wire is tight to the grip. The original black leather scabbard is in excellent condition. The gilt brass mounts and drag are held securely by large staples. All three components retain some of the original gilt. The upper mount is stamped with a matching serial number of N2590. Overall this is a beautiful example of a WWII German Naval officer's saber that will compliment any WWII German Navy collection.
