This is a grouping of an identified China Marine who served with the 4th Marine Division, Marine Corps Expeditionary Force in Shanghai, China. The items are identified to Corporal Edson Jay Evans. Evans was from Syracuse, New York and enlisted in the Marine Corps on 3 January, 1929 at the age of 23, taking boot camp at Parris Island, South Carolina. He was promoted to the rank of Private First in February, 1934 and Corporal in January, 1935, both promotions coming while serving aboard the USS Mississippi. Edson Evans was a member of Headquarters and Headquarters Company, 4th Marine Division, Marine Corps Expeditionary Force in Shanghai, China from February, 1930 to December, 1931. He is shown on the rosters as serving with Service Company, 4th Marines, MCEF, 26th Company, 4th Marines, MCEF, 27th Company 4th Marines, MCEF and Headquarters & Headquarters Company, 4th Marines MCEF. During his time with Headquarters Company he is listed as being with the Military Police while in Shanghai. Evans was honorably discharged from active duty at Marine Corps Base San Diego, California on 4 December, 1938. It is believed he had two years of service during WWII, but does not show up on any Marine Corps rosters. This grouping is made up of his Pattern 1912 Dress Blue tunic dated 1920-21 in the sleeve lining, his USMC black leather garrison belt, .45 caliber holster, USMC ceremonial bayonet scabbard, a pair of gilt droop wing EGA's on the dress blues, Pattern 1927 enlisted summer service coat, a set of subdued droop wing EGA's on the summer service coat, USMC khaki tie, summer garrison cap with EGA, Pattern 1912 enlisted service cap with winter and summer covers, Pattern 1912 enlisted winter breeches and a set of leggings. The 1912 tunic is stamped in both sleeve linings with the USMC Quartermaster Department stamp along with a 2L stamp. Above the Quartermaster's stamp the name C.E. Carter is also stamped. Evans name is not stenciled in the uniform anywhere that I have found. The left sleeve has a couple of small slits in it, none over 1/2" long, near the shoulder. There are two small slits on the back of the left shoulder. The Pattern 1927 summer service coat and Pattern 1912 winter breeches are in very good condition with no damage at all. Both pieces are stamped in several places with E.J. Evans. All other pieces of the grouping, caps, hats, belts, holster and bayonet scabbard are also in excellent condition. These China Marine uniforms don't pop up everyday, and this one will compliment any Marine collection out there.
