This is a US Model 1855 tumbler and wire punch developed for the .58 caliber Model 1855 Springfield musket. The tool was made to remove the tumbler and band springs from the Model 1855 Springfield Rifle Musket. This punch was one of the longest lived tools in the Army service. It saw service from 1855 until at least 1900, spanning the percussion and early cartridge eras. It officially changed names several times. The smaller of the two round pins was used to push out the band springs of the stock when necessary. The large pin was used to remove the tumbler from the lock. These were issued out one per every ten muskets. The tool measures 3 1/2" long. It is not stamped. This will compliment your Civil War gun tool collection.
