This is a cabinet card image of Lieutenant Colonel Edwin L. Drake taken in Winchester, Tennessee in the late 1800's. The visible image measures 4" wide by 5 1/2" tall. It is housed on a cardboard backer that measures 4 3/8" wide by 6 5/8" tall. The top corners of the frame are slightly rounded, the same as the bottom corners, from wear. There is some light flaking along the edges and top of the backer, but nothing that detracts from the image. There is no damage to the image at all. The image shows LTC Drake in his later years, in a sitting pose with a plain back drop. He is wearing a civilian suit, white shirt and tie. Drake has a salt and pepper beard and has a receding hair line. He looks to be in his sixties when this photograph was taken. Sewn onto his jacket collar are the two stars of a Lieutenant Colonel. The studio's name and location are embossed on the front of the cardboard backer, "Hearn Photographer Winchester, Tenn.". A quick check of the Civil War Research Database shows a 1st Lieutenant Edwin L. Drake in Company K, 2nd Tennessee Infantry Regiment. He enlisted on 5 January, 1861. Drake remained with the 2nd Tennessee throughout the war. Initially the regiment was in the Army of Northern Virginia, but after the First Battle of Bull Run was transferred west. The 2nd Tennessee Infantry saw heavy action in 1862 at the Battle of Shiloh, Battles of Richmond and Perryville Kentucky, and the Battle of Stones River under the command of Patrick Cleburne. 1863 saw the 2nd Tennessee engaged at the Battle of Chickamauga, the Battle of Missionary Ridge and the Battle of Ringgold Gap. 1864 saw the 2nd Tennessee almost completely destroyed, fighting in the Battle of Resaca, The Battle of New Hope Church, the Battle of Kennesaw Mountain, the Battle of Peachtree Creek, the Battle of Jonesboro, the Battle of Franklin and the Battle of Nashville, after which the regiment numbered only 65 men. In 1865 the 2nd Tennessee Infantry Regiment fought it's last engagement at the Battle of Bentonville. After that battle the 2nd Tennessee ceased to exist, having been consolidated with the 3rd, 10th, 15th, 18th, 20th, 26th, 30th, 32nd, 37thand 45th Tennessee Infantry Regiments to form the 4th Tennessee Consolidated Infantry Regiment. During his time with the regiment, Edwin Drake was wounded twice, at the Battle of Shiloh and severely at the Battle of Peachtree Creek. He was promoted to Captain during his time with 2nd Tennessee, and was elected Lieutenant Colonel and commander of the newly consolidated 4th Tennessee Regiment. This is a very nice late 1800's image of a Confederate Tennessee Infantry officer that served under one of the most famous Confederate Division commanders of the Civil War, Patrick Cleburne. The image comes in a clear hard plastic sleeve, along with a several print outs of information on Edwin Lucius Drake.
