This is an early 1900's Civil War art print by Louis Harlan. The print depicts a long column of soldiers marching towards a distant town. In the distance a church spire looms in the horizon, seeming to beckon the tired marching men on. The rear of the column has the only detail to it, showing the individual soldier with all his equipment before he blends into the horizon. Two small children, both girls, walk alongside the marching soldiers, holding their hands and most likely offering encouragement. A mature woman walks alongside a wounded soldier, the last in the column. He wears the chevrons of a First Sergeant and uses a crutch under his right arm. The tattered remnants of the American and regimental flags march in the center of the column, showing the effects of their most recent combat. The print is hand signed in pencil Louis Harlan at the lower left corner under the print. In the upper left corner of the mat a kepi, sack coat, bugle and haversack hang on a make shift cross. The kepi has the insignia of the Union 2nd Corps above the crossed cannon of the artillery branch. The print remains in very good condition for it's age. The mat measures 16" wide and 19" high, with the print measuring 7 1/4" wide and 10 1/4" high. Simple but well executed, this print will compliment any collection.
