This is a Model 1943 enlisted mans Eisenhower jacket with Model 1937 trousers and shirt from World War II. This style of jacket became popularly known as the Eisenhower, or "Ike" jacket during World War II. With the 1943 version of the jacket the sleeves have adjustable cuffs, a throat closure tab, adjustable buckle waist straps, two inner pockets and the front pockets have a single button each. A quartermaster tag is sewn into the right inner pocket. It reads "Jacket, Field, WOOL, O.D./Stock No. 55-J-384-585/Size 36L/ROSE BROTHERS/P.O. No. 463/Dated July 17, 1944/Pattern Date 5/10/44/Spec. P.Q.D. No. 437/Phila. Q.M. Depot" with a space for the inspector's stamp below. A small tag sewn into the collar also shows this one to be a size 36L. The chevrons sewn on each sleeve reflect the rank of Technician 4th Grade. The unit patch on the left sleeve is of the 3rd Infantry Division. Five overseas stripes are sewn above the left sleeve cuff, indicating 30 months overseas. There is also one three year service stripe sewn below the overseas stripes. The right sleeve does not have a unit patch sewn on it. The 3rd division has seen service from WWI through current day. During World War II the 3rd Infantry Division fought in Algeria-French Morocco, Tunisia, Sicily, Naples, Anzio, Rome, Southern France, the Rhineland, the Ardennes-Alsace and Central Europe. The 3rd Infantry Division had 39 Medal of Honor recipients during World War II, and suffered 4922 killed, 18,766 wounded, 554 soldiers missing in action and 1735 prisoners of war. The Technician 4th Grade of the 3rd Infantry Division that wore this uniform wears the collar brass of the Infantry on the left side and US on the right side of the collar. His ribbons include the Good Conduct Medal, the European, African, Middle Eastern Campaign Medal with one silver campaign star, two bronze campaign stars, a bronze arrowhead and the American Defense Service Medal. Pinned above this soldier's ribbons is a Combat Infantryman's Badge and below them a Sharpshooters Qualification Badge with Small Bore, Rifle and Automatic Rifle bars. There are also two campaign stars pinned onto the left pocket flap. A French Fourragere is worn around the left shoulder. A Presidential Unit citation along with an Honorable Discharge (Ruptured Duck) patch is above the right pocket. The laundry number of L-5980 is hand written on the lining of the jacket in the neck. A check on the WWII US Army Enlistment Records showed 40 matches for that last initial and last four of the service number. It's going to take some research to find out exactly who wore this uniform. The trousers also have the same laundry number hand written in the waist band. The wool shirt is not marked in any way. This "Ike" uniform is in very good condition and will be a welcomed addition to any WWII collection.
