This is a sheet of six "Death Mask" stamps commemorating the anniversary of the assassination of Reichsprotektor Reinhard Tristan Heydrich. Heydrich was subordinate only to Henrich Himmler in the SS chain of command. He was appointed Deputy Reich Protector of Bohemia and Moravia in the former Czechoslovakia and made Prague his headquarters. On 27 May, 1942 Free Czech agents that had been trained in England attacked Heydrich's Mercedes as it slowed at a sharp curve in the road. They shot at Heydrich as well as tossing an explosive device into the open top car he rode in. Heydrich was wounded by fragments from the explosion, and died of blood poisoning on 4 June, 1942. This stamp was issued on 28 May, 1943, exactly one year and a day after Heydrich's death. If you collect stamps from the WWII period, this set of six will compliment your collection nicely.
