This is a Carte de Vista of General George Edward Pickett. Born in Richmond, Virginia on 16 January, 1825, Johnston was the first of eight children born to Robert and Mary Pickett. Pickett attended the United States Military Academy in 1825 and graduated 59th out of a class of 59 in 1846. His first assignment after graduating from the academy was as a brevet 2nd Lieutenant in the 8th US Infantry Regiment. Lt Pickett would gain national recognition during the Mexican American War when he carried the US flag over the parapets during the Battle of Chapultepec in September of 1847. Pickett served with distinction during the Mexican American War, the Texas frontier, the Washington territory and on San Juan island. Like many of the other southern born officers, when war was imminent and the southern states seceded from the Union, Pickett resigned from the US Army and joined the Confederate Army. During the four year long conflict, George E. Pickett rose to the rank of Major General in the Confederate Army. He held positions of command at the brigade, division and department levels. He is most known for his part on the third day of battle at Gettysburg, where the attack on the Union center came to be known as "Pickett's Charge". This CDV is in very good condition. Pickett's uniform is a frock coat with the single star within a wreath of a Brigadier General on the collar. The image shows Pickett with his shoulders square with the camera. The front of the print has nothing printed on it. A canceled two cent stamp is on the reverse of the image. The cancellation mark is dated with an unreadable day and month, but the year is 1865. The corners of the image are square and crisp. The image is free of smudges, stains, rips, tears or any other imperfections. There is a back mark on this CDV of C.E. Jones & Vanerson of Richmond, Virginia. If you collect Civil War images, your collection won't be complete without this one!
