This is a Remington New Model #4 Rolling Block .32 caliber rifle in takedown configuration. The Remington New Model #4 rifle was produced from 1890 through 1933, with approximately 50,000 manufactured during that period. These muskets were produced in two different barrel lengths, 22 1/2" for .22 and .25 caliber Stevens and 24" for .32 caliber rifles. The earlier production guns had octagonal barrels, later in the production run round barrels were available. This rifle has an overall length of 38 1/2", with a barrel length of 24". The barrel has an even dark plum patina along the entire length of the barrel, with scattered spots of bluing here and there. The exterior of the barrel is smooth with virtually no pitting along the entire surface of the barrel. The bore gauges at .32 caliber, is still fairly bright and shows dirty but good rifling. A good cleaning will probably brighten this one right up. There are two sets of stamps on the barrel, one on the top barrel flat forward of the rear sight and one on the underside of the barrel forward of the forehand. The barrel address of "REMINGTON ARMS CO. ILION N.Y. U.S.A." on the top of the barrel is still very crisp and legible. Stamped on the bottom of the barrel reading from muzzle to breach is J22 2167 32 and what looks to be a proof P. These are the only stamps found on the gun. The mechanics of the rifle work perfectly, but it has not been test fired. Mechanically it is capable of firing, but it is not guaranteed to be a functional firearm. The iron butt plate, receiver and trigger guard have a matching patina to the rest of the rifle, and have a smooth non pitted surface. The walnut stock has medium brown appearance, while the forehand is slightly lighter in appearance. There are no areas of major wood loss on the stock or forehand. The retaining nut on the bottom side of the rear tang screw has worn into the bottom of the stock, and there is a small amount of wood loss adjacent tot he nut. The wood along the barrel channel is straight and crisp. There are no stress cracks anywhere in the wood, just a few small bumps and dings from normal handling. It even comes with a box of .32 Long rimfire cartridges made by the Navy Arms company. Not sure if all 50 are there, but it looks close! It will make a great addition to your American made long arm collection.
