This is a Union 23rd Corps badge in red cloth to signify the 1st Division of the corps. The 23rd Corps served in the Western theater as part of the Army of the Ohio. It was organized in April of 1863 by order of the Department Commander, Ambrose Burnside. The 23rd, along with the 9th Corps, was to maintain a defensive position in East Tennessee and Kentucky. It was made up of two division under the command of General George L. Hartsuff. It's first major action would come during the Knoxville Campaign. The 23rd distinguished itself at the Battle of Campbell's Station and Knoxville. The Army of the Ohio joined General William T. Sherman for the Atlanta Campaign. During this time the 9th Corps was detached and sent back to join the Army of the Potomac. This meant the entire Army of the Ohio consisted of the 23rd Corps, commanded by Major General John M. Schofield. In the fall of 1864 the 23rd Corps was sent back north to counter the Confederate invasion of Tennessee by the Army of Tennessee commanded by General John B. Hood. The 23rd saw extensive fighting during the Battle of Franklin, but was held in reserve during the Battle of Nashville. When the surviving remnants of the Confederate Army of Tennessee withdrew from the Nashville area the 23rd Corps was sent back east. It then served under the Department of the South and took part in the capture of Fort Fisher and the capture of Wilmington, NC. Ultimately the 23rd joined Sherman's Army and was disbanded in August of 1865. This 23rd Corps badge is constructed of red cloth edged in gold bullion trim. The red has faded to and almost purplish color. The badge remains in good condition, but the backing material is almost completely gone. The stitching is still tight and unbroken. The badge measures 2 1/2" at the widest point and 2 5/8" at the highest point. The corps insignia were sometimes worn over the left breast of the jacket, but were often worn on the soldier's headgear. This will look right at home in your Union insignia collection.
