This book was published by P.F. Collier and Son of New York, published in 1917, the narrative is 144 pages and is illustrated with black and white photos, sketches and drawings. This book, volume three of five, looks at the development of warfare after three years of fighting. This coffee table sized book measures 16 1/2" wide and 12" high. Pages five through 15 showcase the war's most important individuals. These include great leaders of many countries involved in the war at that time. The Czar of Russia Nicholas II, England's King George V, President Raymond Poincare of France, German Emperor and King of Prussia Wilhelm II, Emperor of Austria and King of Hungary Franz Joseph I are among the global leaders included. Also included in the beginning pages are several military leaders such as Supreme Commander of the French Army General Joffre, Commander in Chief of the British Home Fleet Admiral Jellico, German Field Marshall Von Hindenberg, Bavarian General Prince Leopold and many more. The remainder of the book's pages contain some of the most compelling and riveting photographs of World War I ever taken. Throngs of villagers fleeing the horrors of war, pulling everything they own in horse drawn carts through the streets, many young soldiers laying dead in the fields and trenches, their final supreme act of allegiance to their homeland forever preserved on film, the weaponry of various countries. You will also find troop formations, units and battalions from various countries in a variety of locations during the war, great ships of war and much more. There is a full page photo of the British liner Lusitania leaving New York. It was sunk by a German submarine and claimed 1150 non combatant lives, including 114 Americans. This act played a key role in the United States entering World War I. There are trench warfare photos, submarine photos, zeppelin and aircraft photos, photos of once thriving cities and towns laying in ruins because they were caught in the war's path, actual battle photos, photos of sunken ship survivors, photos of executed spies and many more vivid and explicit photos. This hard back book is in good condition, but the spine is separating on it.
