This is an Argentine Model 1891 Mauser bayonet with what appears to be the matching scabbard. This one is 20 1/2" overall and has a 15 5/8" blade. The blade has a dull steel gray appearance with just a couple of spots of the original bright finish remaining. The left side of the blade is stamped WEYERSBERG/KIRSCHBAUM & Co/SOLINGEN. The right side of these blades are stamped with MODELO ARGENTINO 1891 in an arc over the Argentine Coat of Arms, with the serial number below the coat of arms. When they were sold as out of service this stamp was ground off. This one has been ground so all that remains of the stamp is MODELO and part of the serial number M 8--8. There are a couple of small nicks along the cutting edge, and the edge has never been sharpened. Both sides of the blade have a deep fuller that is 12 1/4" in length. The spine of the blade has been stamped with the letter A with a star just in front of the cross guard. The aluminum handle is held to the blade tang by two steel pins. The handle is very tight to the blade, no wobble or looseness here. A depressed letter M inside a circle is stamped on each side of the grip, just forward of the front pin. The steel cross guard has several stamps, the letter P on the right side of the guard and the letter R on the left side of the guard and the letter G on the front side. The letters RA within an oval are found on the right side of the pommel. The steel scabbard that accompanies this bayonet is in good condition. There is very little of the original blued finish showing, the entire scabbard has been painted a gloss black. The ball shaped tip is stamped with the RA within an oval and the throat is stamped with the letter E. Just below the throat the scabbard is stamped with the serial number M8268, which I believe matches the bayonet. These bayonets were designed to fit the Modelo Argentino 1891 Mauser rifle that was manufactured in Germany under contract with the Argentine government.
