This is a Model 1935 German helmet from World War II. This model helmet first appeared in 1935 and was an upgrade of the Model 1917 version. The early 1935 helmets received the Heer decal on the left side of the helmet and the National Colors decal on the right side. The decal was not applied at the factory after 1943 to comply with orders issued by the Commander of the Wermacht. These helmets had rolled edges and stamped air vents embossed directly into the steel shell. Exterior paint colors were from medium green to a very dark, almost black, green. Various degrees of texturing were added to the helmet exterior, depending on the plant the helmet was manufactured at. The helmet interior was smooth painted the same color as the exterior. The Model 1935 was similar in appearance to the Model 1917, but was lighter, more functional and significantly updated. Early Model 1935 helmets were issued with the first model aluminum band helmet liners. Model 1935's produced after 1943 were issued with the second model zinc band liners. This helmet is an early war Model 1935, equipped with the aluminum band liner. There is a single decal on the right side of the helmet, that of the SS. There are no factory stamps on the rim of the helmet. There is a visible ink dome stamp in the top of the helmet. It reads Abgenommen in an arc at the top of the stamp. Below that are the Roman numerals IV with the date 1938 under that. There are two lines below the date that have an upward arc, Beschaffungsamt and fur Heer u. Marine. This one has most of the original dark green paint remaining on the outside of the helmet. It has been sprayed over with the green and tan colors used during the Normandy campaign, but has no red on it. The inside retains 95% of the original paint. The chin strap is present and is still very pliable. The drawstring looks to be a replacement. The liner is complete and the leather is in good condition. It fits the shell very tight. So tight that I have been unable to see the stamps on the front, right and left side of the liner. The leather shows signs of significant wear. This one definitely has the look of having been there! If you collect WWII memorabilia here's an opportunity to own an honest, combat used iconic German helmet from that global conflict.
