This is an image of the W. B. Tate United Confederate Veteran Camp of Morristown, Tennessee. This photograph was taken outside the Liberty Hill Methodist Church in Morristown in 1910 by the Scott's Photography Studio. The image is housed in a carboard frame that measures 14" wide and 12" high, the image itself is 9 1/4" wide and 7 1/4" high. There are 36 of the old veterans pictured, along with a couple of grandchildren. All are wearing suits, many wearing reunion badges or their Southern Cross of Honor. The gentleman kneeling on the far right is holding up a bugle! The camp, organized on 24 August, 1894, was named in honor of William Brown Tate of Granger County, Tennessee. Tate was born on 3 December, 1819 in Granger County, Tennessee. He enlisted in the Confederate Army on 25 June, 1861 at Mossy Creek, Tennessee at the age of 42. He was mustered into Company E, 4th Tennessee Cavalry Battalion as a Private. Tate would survive the war, and amassed a sizeable fortune afterwards. In 1899 he donated $20,000 to the maimed Confederate Veterans of East Tennessee. This image has good clarity, but is a little light on the right hand side. If you are a collector of East Tennessee Civil War items, this could be the centerpiece of your collection.
