This is a US Model 1910 canteen set that was used during World War I. The canteen is in issued, very good condition. This canteen has the vertical weld. The cap is the WWI style fluted design and the cork seal is present. A retaining chain is riveted to the top of the cap and attached to a retaining ring at the neck of the canteen. The back of the canteen is maker marked U.S./ACA 1918, along with a stamped # 6. This canteen has been with the carrier forever. In the front of the canteen there are two dents that align perfectly with the eagle snaps on the carrier. The canteen cup with this set is in very good condition. It is clearly stamped on the bottom in a single line, "US-1918-T.J.W.B.M. CO.". The cotton duck cover is a dirty pea green color. The carrier is still in strong condition, but shows considerable wear and staining. There are holes in the fabric where the canteen cup edges rub against it, but the felt liner is still intact. All stitching is strong, but there are areas where it is frayed or missing. This one has the early eagle snaps instead of the LTD fasteners. The inside of the left flap is ink stamped R.I.A. 1916. The carrier still has the M1910 equipment hook still securely sewn on the rear. The front of the carrier is stenciled with the U.S., and the bottom is stenciled 981. Of all the gear a GI carries, this is the one thing he can't go without. This model canteen saw service in WWI, WWII, Korea, and the early part of the Vietnam war. Nice little piece for the beginning collector.
