This is a Hagner No. 2 Type cartridge box used by the Rhode Island Militia during the Indian Wars period. This cartridge box is a very good example of a Hagner No. 2 Type cartridge box used with .45-70 ammunition. The closure tab for this cartridge box comes from the bottom front of the box and closes on a brass finial. This cartridge box was worn on the waist belt and has no sling. The front shows very little crazing, mainly around the outer edges of the front flap. All stitching is still very strong and tight. The box was manufactured by the Watervliet Arsenal of New York. The back of the cartridge box has a very strong and clear WATERVLIET ARSENAL stamp. The wooden 20 round cartridge block is still present and in good condition. It is retained by two brass screws entering through the back side of the box, and one center in the front of the box. The front flap of the box is embossed R.I.M. within an oval and is very legible. Both belt loops are still present and are securely attached to the box. This is a pretty nice example of a mid to late 1870's state issued cartridge box used during the Indian Wars period.
