This is a Model 1861 rifle musket manufactured by the Savage Revolving Firearms Company under contract for the Springfield Armory of Massachusetts. The Savage firm was located in Middletown, Connecticut and produced 25,520 of these rifles between 1862 and 1864. The overall length of the weapon is 56" with a barrel length of 40". This old war horse of the Union Infantry has no traces of the national bright finish on the barrel, or anywhere else for that matter. This one is a true, out of the attic, unmolested Civil War long gun that hasn't had a screw turned on it in ages. The bore is dark but shows visible rifling, gauges out at .61 caliber and has light pitting and a build up of dirt and crud throughout. A good cleaning would do this gun wonders! The original two leaf rear sight is still present as well as the pinched front sight. The barrel proof markings of V/P/Eagle Head are strong and very visible. There is minimal pin pricking and pitting at the bolster and breech. the date of 1863 is worn, but still visible on the breech just forwrd of the tang. The clean out screw for the bolster is present and not buggered up. The lockplate and hammer have the same dark patina as the barrel. The lockplate is stamped with an eagle over US forward of the hammer and SAVAGE R.F.A./MIDDLETOWN CON. ahead of the eagle. To the rear of the hammer is the date, 1863. The mechanics are sound, with the hammer locking up in half and full cock. The nose cap, trigger guard, barrel bands, sling swivel and butt plate all have the matching dark patina of the barrel as well. All three barrel bands are stamped with a U. The butt plate US stamp is clearly visible, along with the unit information of 61st/K/84. A swelled, tulip head ramrod came with the gun, complete with the threads. The stock shows the same dark patina as the hardware, but is in very good condition. There are very few bumps and bruises and no wood loss. The wood has also taken on a dark appearance. The name C.D. WILD. has been stamped into both stock combs. There is no doubt this mid war Springfield made by Savage, the standard issue weapon of the Union, has been together for many, many years. It will make a fine addition to any Civil War collection.
