This is a post WWI bolt carrier pouch for the M1903 Mark I Pederson device. The Pederson device was designed by John Pederson as a light weight field expedient way to convert a standard M1903 rifle into a semi automatic rifle simply by replacing the standard bolt with the Pederson device and it's special 40 round magazine. The US Ordnance Department adopted the Pederson device in March of 1918, ordering 500,000 of the devices from Remington. About 65,000 of them had been delivered to the government when the war ended in November of 1918. These devices were deemed Top Secret, and were placed in storage until April, 1931 when 64, 873 of the devices and accoutrements were destroyed. This rare piece, manufactured by the Rock Island Arsenal in March of 1920, is one of the few surviving pieces of that history. The khaki colored canvas pouch measures 11" in length and 4" in width. It attached to the standard cartridge belt via a M1910 hook. The inside of the flap is ink stamped R.I.A./3-20. When the Pederson device was installed in the rifle, the standard 1903 bolt was carried in this pouch. It remains in very good condition, and is probably missing from most collections that are lucky enough to have a M1903 Mark I with the Pederson device.
