This is an Model 1892 bayonet manufactured by the Springfield Armory. There are a couple of variants of this bayonet, but only one official model, the 1892. The bayonet has an overall length of 16 1/4", with a blade length of 11 5/8". The blades of these bayonets were blued until 1 April, 1895. After that date the blades were left in the bright. This one shows evidence of having been blued at some point, possible arsenal rework, but of the blade has a muted bright finish showing. This one has been sharpened at some point as well. The obverse side of the ricasso is stamped US. The reverse side is stamped with the date of 1903. The handle has a steel cross guard with attachment point to fit the Model 1892, 1896 or 1898 Krag Jorgensen rifle. The walnut grips are retained by two rivets. The grips show plenty of wear from use, but are in good condition. The bird head pommel has a dark, almost black patina, while the cross guard has a patina matching that of the blade. The spring type release works fine and this bayonet will properly secure to either any model of Krag rifle. It comes with a Model 1899 scabbard. This is the fourth variation of scabbard for the bayonet, with the limited rotation of the hanger and the wide wire loop that fits over a single cartridge loop of the ammunition belt. The scabbard is sheet metal that has had all the bluing removed. The hanger , for whatever reason, retains the majority of the bluing. There are no stamps or markings anywhere on the scabbard. This is one of those in between wars pieces, to late for the Spanish American War and phased out of service before WWI. But if you are a US bayonet collector you gotta have one of these in your collection!
