WWI US Model 1918 Grenade Vest

This is a US Model 1918 grenade vest used during World War I. The official nomenclature was Grenade Carrier, Model of 1918, Four Inch Pocket. The vest is in unissued, mint condition with absolutely no flaws. The body of the vest measures 17 1/2" wide and 10 1/2" high. Each of the 11 pockets, arranged with 6 pockets on the top and five on the bottom, measure 2 1/2" wide and 4" high. The vest was designed to be used with the Mark I and Mark II American grenades. The Doughboys also used the French F1 grenade and the British "Mills Bomb". The vest was intended to be worn across the soldier's chest, with a 2" wide strap worn around the soldier's neck and four 3/4" wide 6' long straps tied behind the back. These vests could also be used to carry extra rifle ammunition in the pockets. This one is ink stamped on the back GEO. P. IDE & CO./JUNE 1918/INSPECTED BY JOHN E. WRIGHT.
