US Purple Heart Presentation Box

This is a presentation box for the Purple Heart medal issued to combat wounded of all branches of the US military. The box measures 6 5/8" long and 3 5/8" wide. The "coffin box" style box is dark blue in color with gold two line lettering that reads PURPLE/HEART. A two line gold border design is on the cover of the box. The box was designed to present a full size Purple Heart medal, ribbon and miniature Purple Heart tie tack to a wounded soldier. This style of Purple Heart presentation case was used from World War II through the end of the Vietnam War. It was anticipated that the casualty rate for the invasion of Japan would be enormous, so the government ordered thousands of the medals in cases. Fortunately, Japan surrendered after the atomic bomb was dropped over Nagasaki and thousands of American lives were spared. This created such a surplus of Purple Hearts that the government continued to issue the medals in the WWII presentation cases all the way through the Vietnam War. This presentation case is in good condition, showing only a few light scuffs on the front of the case. If you have a loose medal that needs a case, here you go!
