This is a German Naval Jack from the World War II period. This one is a very desirable size, measuring 34"" wide and 19" high. It is constructed of a single panel of red cotton fabric. A white disc with a black canted swastika is printed in the center of the red field. This flag is two sided. A 1 1/2" white canvas hoist is sewn into the left side, with hemp loops at the top and bottom. This flag was designed to be flown from a jack staff on the bow of a warship to indicate it's nationality. The colors of the flag remain very vibrant, with the red field showing no discoloration or fading. There is no staining on the flag on either side. The white field of the swastika shows just two small spots of discoloration. There are no rips or tears in the Naval jack, but there are a few small moth holes scattered around, all in the red field. On the obverse of the hoist are two ink stamps, one identifying the maker of the flag and the other identifying the flag itself. The makers stamp reads N.V.P.F. v. VLISSINGEN & CO'S KATOENFABR./HELMOND (HOLLAND). The type and size of the flag are ink stamped at the opposite end of the hoist and read G. FL. 50 x 85. This indicates the type of flag, Gosch Flagge, and the size of 50x85 centimeters. It seems that any German flag was considered a prized souvenir for the allied soldiers, and this one most likely made it's way back to the states in some GI's duffel bag after the war. If you have the wall space, this Naval Jack still has some amazing display power!
