This is a Japanese Rising Sun flag from the World War II period. The flag measures 52" 1/4" wide and 41" high. It is constructed of two panels of white cloth with a dyed red disc in the center, representing the sun. Emanating from the center disc are twelve red rays. This flag was adopted by the Imperial Japanese Army in 1870 and the Imperial Japanese Navy in 1889 as the war flag of Japan. One of the original ties is still attached to the left hand side of the flag, one is missing. The colors of the banner show the effects of being out in the weather and sun, the red disc and rays showing some discoloration and fading. The white field shows some very slight staining scattered about. There are no major rips or tears in the flag, but there are a few small holes scattered around, all in the white field. This flag came with a note stating it came from Osaka, Japan. These Japanese flags made prized souvenirs for Marines and soldier's alike. Mostly likely this one returned home with someone who had pulled occupation duty in Japan after the war ended. It displays well and will compliment any collection.
