This is a book of ink and brush sketches of life in the Japanese prisoner of war camp at Sham Sui Po by Lieutenant Alexander V. Skvorzov of the Hong Kong Volunteer Defense Corps. The book contains 16 ink and brush sketches, each overlaid with captioned tissue guards. Lt. Skvorzov was originally from Russia, but moved to Hong Kong with his wife and family in 1938 to take an engineering job. In 1941 he became the manager of the Hong Kong Engineering and Construction Company. As a member of the Hong Kong Volunteer Defense Corps, he was commissioned a 2LT, one of 12 officers of the Field Company Engineers. He was tasked with blowing up bridges and roads to slow the Japanese advance that began on 8 December, 1941. Lieutenant Skvorzov, along with the rest of the HKVDC, was surrendered on 25 December, 1941 when Hong Kong surrendered to the Japanese Army. From 1943 until hi release on 30 August, 1945, Skvorzov was interned at the Sham Sui Po camp where the sketches were made. This is a first edition copy printed in 1948 in Hong Kong. It is a rare piece that contains a look at life as a Japanese prisoner of war, and remains in very good condition.
