This is a Model 1940 German Kriegsmarine helmet from World War II. This model helmet first appeared in 1935 and was an upgrade of the Model 1917 version. The early 1940 helmets received the Kriegsmarine or Herr decal on the left side of the helmet and the National Colors decal on the right side. The decal was not applied at the factory after 1943 to comply with orders issued by the Commander of the Wehrmacht. These helmets had rolled edges and stamped air vents embossed directly into the steel shell. Exterior paint colors were from medium green to a very dark, almost black, green and some were painted battleship gray. Various degrees of texturing were added to the helmet exterior, depending on the plant the helmet was manufactured at. The helmet interior was smooth painted the same color as the exterior. The Model 1940 was similar in appearance to the Model 1917, but was lighter, more functional and significantly updated. Early Model 1940 helmets were issued with the first model aluminum band helmet liners. Model 1940's produced after 1943 were issued with the second model zinc band liners. This helmet is an early war Model 1940, equipped with the aluminum band liner. The left side of the helmet has the decal of the Kriegsmarine, there is no decal o the right side of the helmet. Stamped on the left side is Q64, the Q represents the Quist factory located in Esslingen, Germany. The number 64 is the shell size of 64mm. The stamps are faint, but clearly represent Q64. I can see no stamp in the rear of the helmet to show the production run of the helmet. Neatly printed in white paint is the name K. H. Kumpel on the inside of the rear rim. The Quist factory had a small contract to produce Kriegsmarine helmets during 1940 only. This one has 85% of the original paint remaining on the outside of the helmet. The inside retains 95% of the original paint. The chin strap is intact and is in very good condition. The liner drawstring is a modern replacement. The liner is complete and the leather is dry, but pliable. It fits the shell very tight. So tight that I have been unable to see the stamps on the front, right and left side of the liner. The leather shows signs of significant wear, but the size stamp of 56 is clearly visible. This one definitely has the look of having been there! If you collect WWII memorabilia here's an opportunity to own an honest, used iconic German helmet from that global conflict.
