This is a US World War II M1 helmet and liner. The shell was manufactured by the McCord Radiator company, the liner was made by Westinghouse. The heat stamp of the shell is not visible, but it is a rear seam, swivel bale type manufactured after November, 1944. The helmet has an almost relic appearance, retaining the original paint with scattered rust spots, the bottom 1/3 of the right side is all rust from being submerged in water. The interior paint condition matches the exterior of the helmet. There are also traces of white paint on the exterior of the helmet, along with Master Sergeant stripes outlined in red on the front of the helmet and USMC painted in white letters on the back. The helmet shell has a couple of small dents nothing major. There are no stress cracks in the shell. The manganese steel band around the rim retains the majority of the paint. The rim has a rear seam band. The chin strap bails are swivel. The chin straps are missing from the bails. The Westinghouse liner is from late 1943 to the end of 1944. The Westinghouse stamp is clearly visible in the inside top of the liner, along with the number 17. The liner has also been repainted at some point, it looks to be a war period repaint. The liner is intact minus the leather chin strap. The nape strap is broken. The suspension cloth is cotton and khaki in color. It is retained to the liner by steel A washers painted green. The sweatband is complete but is not of the correct period. The entire suspension system shows minimal use. The cotton suspension straps show light soiling. The garters for the liner chin strap are both present. This liner never had A yokes installed, as it was not intended for airborne use. The liner has an old piece of masking tape on the right side with ER 13677200 written in pencil. Obviously this liner was not with the shell when it sustained the water damage. Hopefully the service number will provide some much needed information. If it turns out that the number matches a Korean War period Marine he could turn out to be a Chosin Reservoir survivor! Chances are if he was a Master Sergeant he was a WWII vet as well as a Korean War vet. More information to follow, hopefully.
