This is a US Eighth Army patch from the World War II and Japan occupation period. The patch measures 2 1/4" at the widest point 2 1/4" at the highest point. The patch is an octagon shape divided into eight red and white sections. The shape of the patch, along with the eight segments of the patch represent the numerical designation of the army. The colors of the patch represent distinguishing flags for Armies. The Eighth Army was activated on 10 June, 1944 and the patch was approved the month before. The Eighth Army, commanded initially by LTG Robert L. Eichelberger, was credited with the New Guinea, and Philippine campaigns. The one piece patches are all machine sewn, I believe one was done in Japan during the occupation directly after the war ended. There is one moth nip on the Japanese made patch, the patch has a cloth backing on it. It has been removed from a uniform. The other patch is undamaged and has never been on a uniform.
