This is a black and white "Yard Long" photograph of the USS Waters, APD-8, taken underway at an unknown location. The image measures 25" wide and 8" high. It shows the ship in three different views, from the bow, the fantail and a starboard profile view. The USS Waters was a Wickes class destroyer during the war, being named in honor of Daniel Waters, an officer in the Continental Navy. During the war the ship performed several different functions, from convoy escort, anti submarine patrols, conversion to high speed transport and finally back to a destroyer designation. When the Waters was converted from a destroyer to high speed transport she received the designation APD-8. It was during this time that the ship was home to many different units during the trips to invade the Japanese held islands. Among the units were the 4th Marine Raider Battalion, the New Zealand Commando Force and the 1st Battalion 2nd Marine Regiment to name a few. The USS Waters earned seven battle stars for her service during WWII. In the three pane view of the ship you can see the depth charge racks and propeller guards on the fantail of the ship. Clearly visible in the profile view are the landing craft APD-8 used to land personnel on the beaches. The Waters was decommissioned on 12 October, 1945 at Terminal Island at Los Angeles, California. This image is very clear and shows some very good detail. This would make a great addition to any Navy collection, framed and hanging on the wall. Especially next to the image of the crew that served her!
