This is a Model 1910 uniform consisting of the tunic and pants. The summer version of this uniform is a little more difficult to find, as it is made of cotton twill fabric instead of the more common wool fabric. The jacket, or tunic, is unlined and is of a single breast design. There are five subdued bronze general service buttons on the front, along with six smaller general service buttons. The jacket has a standing collar, shoulder epaulettes, plain cuffs and four pockets on the front. Each epaulet has a small general service button, as does each pocket to secure the flap. The collar has two one inch disks, one US with the number 12 below it and the other the branch insignia of the Artillery with the number 1 below it. The left sleeve has the patch of the 1st Battalion, 12th Field Artillery Regiment, 2nd Infantry Division, a red discharge stripe and three bullion overseas chevrons. The left sleeve has the chevrons of a Corporal on it. The 2nd Division was part of the Allied Expeditionary Force that fought in World War I. It is the only Army unit with the distinction of being formed overseas, being organized in France on 26 October, 1917 at Bourmont, Haute Marne. The 2nd Division was awarded the French Croix de guerre on three separate occasions. They fought the Third Battle of the Aisne, Belleau Wood, the Chateau Thierry Campaign, St. Mihiel, the Meuse-Argonne Offensive and the Aisne-Marne Offensive. The division suffered 1964 soldiers and 4478 Marines killed in action, along with 9782 soldiers and 17,752 Marines wounded. The jacket has the initials ALR ink stamped in the collar. The pants have the soldier first two initial of A L and his last name R??LE in two places on the waist band. It is also marked C 12 FA below his name. There is some research to be done for someone who has a little more time to spend on it than me! The jacket and pants are in very good condition. There is a small hole along the left seam of the pants about knee height, and two smaller ones on the back side of the same area. The crotch is missing three of the four buttons and the fabric loop for the hoop to secure the pants is pretty tired. The strings are still present in the pants legs. Hopefully I will have more information to add about the soldier soon!
