This is a German M31 mess kit used during World War II. The kit consists of a cooking pot with wire handle and a lid with handle to serve as a plate or bowl. This all aluminum early war mess kit has two different makers marks and dates, but has been together for a long time. The pot is a pre war piece that is marked ESB/40 on the left iron wire attachment point. The front of the pot is clearly marked with the three soup ration lines. The lid shows a different maker of ZPStZ and is dated 1938. This one would have originally been painted field gray when it left the factory, but now shows remnants of an olive green coat. The indicator that this one has been together for years is the soldier engraved markings on both pieces. The lid has the name WOTZKO scratched into on one side of the handle attachment, and WO on the other side of it. The pot is marked with the same WO beside the second soup ration line. On the back side of the pot is an elaborate family crest or unit marking, not sure which. I have ruled out the different coat of arms for the states of Germany. I suspect this is the crest for the Wotkzo family. These two pieces fit together like a glove, and have most certainly been together since the war. This will make a great addition to your WWII German collection.
