This is an excavated South Carolina cuff/vest size button used during the Civil War. The button was recovered in DeKalb County, Georgia near the site of the Battle of Atlanta. This battle took place on 22 July, 1864 when Union forces under the command of Major General William Tecumseh Sherman met the Confederate forces under the command of Lieutenant General John Bell Hood. The day long battle was considered a Union victory, even though the city of Atlanta remained under Confederate control until 2 September, 1864. Union casualties were listed as 3722 killed, wounded or missing in action. The Confederate forces reported higher casualties, with 5500 killed, wounded or missing in action. This South Carolina button is in good condition, is of two piece construction and has a shank. The button is free of damage and the shank is still standing straight. It has achieved an absolute beautiful chocolate brown patina, with just traces of the gold gilt showing through. This button has the letter S C to the left and right of the Palmetto tree and is back marked EXTRA RICH. This button would make a great piece for you South Carolina collectors out there!
