This is a fixed blade entrenching tool carrier used by the German military during World War II. This was the standard issue entrenching tool issued to EM/NCO's of all branches of the German military, and continued in use even after the M43 folding entrenching tool entered the system. The early carriers were made of all leather construction through 1938. After 1938 the carrier was constructed of leather and a material called Press-stoff, pressed cardboard. This three piece carrier was formed in the shape of the shovel blade, with the open front having a rim, a center leather strip to ensure a tight fit of the blade, and the closed back piece being sewn together. The carrier had two belt loops sewn between the front and rear pieces. A small buckle was sewn onto the left side of the front piece and a long leather strap was sewn to the right side. This strap was used to secure the shovel to the carrier. It was also used to secure the K98 bayonet and has been noted in period photographs as securing an M24 grenade. The carrier was worn on the leather waist belt of the soldier. This carrier remains in very good condition. The leather is a bit stiff, but is not damaged. All stitching remains tight and unbroken. The belt loops are securely attached and intact, as is the leather strap to secure the shovel. The roller buckle is securely attached and remains functional. There are no visible makers marks on the carrier, but on the reverse of the carrier is a stamped number 68 and two circles with what appear to be SS runes within the circles. This carrier would still be able to suspend an entrenching tool from a belt and look great on a mannequin.
