This is a German M31 Zeltbahn in splinter camouflage pattern used during World War II. The Zeltbahn, or shelter quarter, was a multi purpose piece of equipment that could be used as a rain cape, a means of personal camouflage, to camouflage equipment or used as a means to construct multi person shelters. The new triangular shaped zeltbahn was introduced in 1931 and was field gray. By 1939 the splinter camouflage pattern was being issued. It was made of cotton gabardine tightly woven to help make it water proof. Early war shelter quarters were printed in two shades of camouflage pattern, one side dark and the other side a lighter color. Later war examples used tow pieces of the darker colored camouflage together. The two short sides of the shelter quarter had twelve dish shaped buttons and reinforced button holes to attach to other quarter shelters. The base side had six grommets through which a drawstring was weaved. There were also six more buttons and button holes for fastening the zeltbahn closed when worn as a rain cape. Each corner had a large grommet to tent pegs. Four zeltbahns attached together could accommodate four soldiers. This zeltbahn remains in very good condition. It shows a couple of repairs and has two other holes along the edge, but is still very well constructed. All buttons and grommets are present, all stitching remains very strong. This one is of a later war production, as both sides are of the darker camouflage material. There is a visible makers stamp, but it is not legible. This one could be displayed on a mannequin being worn as a rain cape, or rolled up on a belt.
