This is a Virginia Manufactory Cavalry Saber from the Civil War period. It is a third model, manufactured between 1808 and 1814, with a partial run during 1821 and is distinguished by the rounded pommel cap and the slot for a sword knot in the knuckle bow. The first and second models of this cavalry saber were not very popular with the Virginia militia units, as the 40" curved blades proved to be very unmanageable. This created the third model, with a straighter blade and a shortened length of 36". This third model Virginia Manufactory Cavalry saber has been shortened to a length of 34". The blade width also tapers, measuring 1 5/16" at the ricasso, and gradually tapering down to 1" about 7 1/2" from the tip. The number 22 has been stamped into the obverse ricasso, while the number 4 is stamped into the reverse ricasso. A similar sword to this one, with the same number 22 on the obverse ricasso was also marked on the spine with 4, V,A REG,T. There are no markings on the spine of this blade, but it seems likely this one came from the same Virginia military division of the state. The blade was made with two fullers, one narrow and deep, that ran along the spine of the blade. The second fuller was wider and shallower and ran below the first. The 5" sheet iron, half basket guard is secure to the blade. The peen on the pommel looks to be undisturbed. The walnut grip is covered with the original leather and single strand brass wire. The obverse side of the leather has had green paint applied to it, possibly to cover up the gold paint visible in several places. The reverse side of the grip is almost completely covered in gold paint. It's a known fact that many southern articles of war went back north as war trophies. Many were displayed in GAR halls and were painted gold. It is a known fact that many of these Virginia Manufactory swords were shortened and used during the Civil War. This one came into the shop with no known history, and no scabbard. It's a pretty fair bet this Third Model Virginia Manufactory was carried by a Virginia cavalryman during the Civil War, was captured and decorated some GAR hall as a war trophy. It will make a very nice addition to your Civil War collection!
