This is a private purchase US Model 1918 tunic worn by the US Army during World War I. This 1918 tunic was made in New York City, New York, as shown by the clothing label of the Marks Arnheim Inc, sewn in the collar area of the lining, as well as the tailor tag sewn in the right side inner pocket. It features the four pocket design with epaulets. The five button coat has the Great Seal US eagle buttons are all back marked BUTTON CO. WATERBURY CONN., with six smaller buttons of the same back mark for the pockets and epaulets. The coat is fully lined and has one inner pocket on the right side. The name and rank of Capt C. M. Gibson is hand written on the tailor's tag inside the pocket. The left sleeve has a beautiful blue felt with silver bullion 3rd Corps patch sewn on it. There is no red discharge stripe sewn on below the 82nd patch. Above the left sleeve trim is two gold chevrons of bullion, indicating one year of overseas service. The left side of the collar has the U.S. and crossed cannons of an Artillery officer. The right collar is identical to the left side in appearance. There are no ribbons or any other devices displayed anywhere on the uniform. Each epaulette has a "coffin top" Captain's bar pinned to it. In the photographs it shows the one on the right epaulette missing, it was found in a pocket and added after the photos were taken. There is very minimal insect damage showing on the tunic, just a spot here and there. The trousers are also in very good condition. There is no moth damage, but there are three small repairs in the front, all in the crotch area. The trousers are lined around the waist band, have two front pockets, watch pocket and two rear pockets with buttons. There is no makers label in the trousers, and they are not named. This is a very nice example of a private purchase US Model 1918 uniform worn by an Artillery Captain of the United States 3rd Corp. It displays well on a mannequin and will look great in any war room!
