It is a single edged blade with an integral fuller that measures 26 1/4" and a narrow fuller along the false edge measuring 17 3/4" in length. The blade is free of nicks or any other damage. The original cross polish is still present, giving the entire blade a mirror like finish. The reverse ricasso is marked AMES MFg Co/CHICOPEE,/MASS. The obverse ricasso is stamped US/JH/1858. The blade has not been sharpened. The brass hilt has a beautiful mellow golden patina. The original leather washer is present and the blade is very tight to the hilt. The wooden grip is still covered in the original leather wrap. There are no cracks in the grip. The leather wrap is intact and tight. The double twisted brass wire is tight to the grip. The brass pommel cap is also tight to the grip. The inspectors initials of WAJ and JH are visible in the back of the pommel cap. The peen appears to be unmolested. The original iron scabbard is inspector stamped JH on the drag. It is free of dents. The scabbard has taken on a steel gray patina with very minimal pitting. The drag is integral and shows minor wear, as do the mounts and suspension rings. Overall this is a beautiful example of a Cavalry Saber that most likely saw service during the American Civil War. This beauty would compliment any American Civil War collection.
