Identified Confederate Side Knife

This is an identified Confederate "SPEAR POINT" Blacksmith Bowie with it's original pigskin sheath. This side knife Bowie is beautiful, with a blacksmith crafted blade made from a file. The oak handle has a carved ferrule and a decorative design of three incised lines. The small iron cross guard is a little loose, most likely due to wood shrinkage. There is a small crack running parallel to the tang that is 2 1/2" long. The blade is made from a file, a common practice among Confederate knives. The serations of the file are very visible along the entire length of the blade. A slight median ridge is present in this blade. It still has some period sharpness to it! The original pigskin scabbard has honest usage with beautiful eye appeal. It too has shrank with time, and is slightly shorter than the blade now. The belt loop is no longer on the scabbard. All stitching on the scabbard is unbroken and remains very tight. This particular Bowie was carried by John R. Giles of the 3rd Tennessee Cavalry, CS, Nathan Bedford Forrest's original cavalry unit. A small informational booklet comes with the knife and I will write a letter stating the history and the identification. The Bowie is 15 3/4" inches overall and has a 10 1/2" inch blade.
