US Model 1864 Cartridge Box
Item #: WR12
This is a Model 1864 Cartridge box for a .58 caliber rifled musket from the Civil War. This box is maker marked, with the stamp of S.H Young & Co. NEWARK N.J. between the two belt loops on the back of the box. This firm received a contract on 1 February, 1865 for 10,000 infantry accoutrements. Considering the remarkable condition of this cartridge box, it must have been produced during this contract and then sat on a shelf in some government warehouse until the war ended. It is in absolute mint condition! The cartridge box measures 7 1/8" wide, 5 1/4" tall and 1 5/8" deep. The leather shoulder strap is very supple and flexible. There is an extremely small amount of crazing, but no loss of leather. There is no breast plate on the strap and it doesn't look like it ever had one. There is an inspectors cartouche on the strap, but I can't make out the initials. The leather outer flap has an ordnance inspectors stamp on the lower left corner. The letters US are embossed on the outer flap. The leather closure tab is sewn and riveted on and is in perfect condition. The brass pear shaped finial is straight and tight to the box. Both roller buckles for the shoulder strap are securely attached to the box, as well as both belt loops. This style of cartridge box was designed to be worn on the soldiers belt or over the shoulder. The inner flap for cartridge box tins has a small amount of crazing. The two cartridge box tins are still reporting for duty. They are straight and still have a decent shine to them. The implement pouch flap and closure tab are in good order. The stitching is strong throughout the box. This one could still be worn today, it would make a great compliment to a mannequin display! If you own this one you won't ever need to upgrade.
