This is a Model 1863 Starr single action Army .44 caliber revolver. These Starr revolvers were designed as single shot at the request of the government. The single shot version was deemed an improved and less costly successor to the Model 1858 Army double action revolver. The single action Starr's were produced between 1863 and 1865 with a quantity of approximately 32,000. They were six shot, .44 caliber cap and ball pistols with a round cylinder, 8 inch round barrel and walnut grips. The metal was blued while the hammer and loading lever were case hardened. Serial numbers for the Model 1863 were continued from the 1858 Army, beginning at approximately 23,000. This six shooter has all matching serial numbers of 27574, indicating an early 1863 production piece. All the metal has a matching blackish brown patina. The 8" barrel has a C stamped on the left side near the frame while the right side is stamped with the letter D near the frame. The serial# 27574 is stamped under the loading lever above the pivot point of the break open barrel. The bore is lightly rusted but should clean up well, the rifling is still good. The round six shot cylinder is stamped with the serial# 27574. It also has the inspectors stamps of C and D. The left side of the frame is stamped STARR ARMS Co. NEW YORK. Just behind the nipple shield on the left frame is another C inspector stamp. Above this is another letter C on the barrel just forward barrel retaining screw. The trigger guard carries the inspector stamp D. The right side of the frame is stamped STARR'S PATENT JAN. 15, 1856. The serial# 27574 is found on the frame under the hammer. The action is very crisp on this pistol. The original walnut grips retain 90% of the original varnish. There are no inspector cartouches on the grips. They have a couple of light scratches on the sides, but as happens quite often, somebody used it as a hammer. The bottom of the grip has definitely been used to shoe a horse or build a house! That said, this is an exceptional example of a Civil War era revolver purchased by the US government, third only to Colt and Remington! This one will round out your Civil War handgun collection with no regrets.
