This is an M1905/42 bayonet manufactured by the Springfield Armory. The bayonet was originally produced as the M1905 and converted over to the M1905/42 for use in WWII by replacing the wooden hand grips with black plastic grips. The bayonet has a 16" blade with a 4" handle. The blade has been parkerized, but the original bright finish shows through along the edges and about the last two inched of the blade at the tip. There is a slight edge from period sharpening long ago. The obverse side of the ricasso is stamped US/1040997. The reverse side is stamped SA/Ordnance Bomb/1918. The handle has a steel cross guard with attachment point to fit either the 1903 Springfield rifle or the M1 Garand. The black plastic grips are retained by a single screw. The obverse grip shows some damage, areas of the plastic incised grip are missing. The bird head pommel and cross guard has a dark steel gray patina. The spring type release works fine and this bayonet will properly secure to either a 1903 or Garand either one. It comes with an M3 fiberglass scabbard. The M3's were issued for use during WWII. The sheath is fiberglass with a steel throat and hooks for attachment to the cartridge belt. There is an Ordnance bomb insignia with the U.S. centered on the bomb on the steel throat. The scabbard has a small 1/8" hole drilled through it at the very tip, probably to allow a tie down to pass though to keep the scabbard from flopping around. There are two cracks in the scabbard, both just below the throat that are approximately 2" long. If you collect WWII memorabilia this one will fit right in.
