This is a Confederate side knife blacksmith crafted from a file. The overall length of this southern side knife is 11 3/8" with a blade length of 6 3/4". This one does not come with a scabbard, not sure it even had one. This little beauty is the perfect size to have been carried in your boot or stuck in your belt for quick access. The oak handle is just a shade over 4" and has an oval shape. It feels just perfect in your hand. There are no cracks or wood loss with the handle at all. The cross guard 1 1/2" and has an interference fit with the handle. It appears to be made of pewter and fits the oak like a glove. The blade has taken on a dark attic black patina. The spine is 1/16", made from a rasp or small file. The original hatch marks are still visible on the spine and near the back of the blade near the handle. There are no visible pins attaching the tang to the handle. It also appears to be an interference fit. Whoever crafted this knife knew what he was doing. The blade is as tight to the handle as the day it was made. There is no wobble or deflection anywhere in the knife. While it's isn't a monster 24" bowie, this is one fine piece of southern craftsmanship made during the American Civil War. It will compliment any Confederate collection.
