Fixed Button Brass Spur
Item #: WR23
This is a civilian brass fixed button spur from the Civil War era. The opening of the heel band is just over 3" wide. The shank is 1" in length and has a very slight bend. The iron rowel is present, but rusted tight to the pin and does not rotate. The brass has a deep chocolate patina with small spots of verdigris scattered around. The rowel is an orange/reddish color from the rust. There is still some dirt left on this one from where it came out of the ground. While this is a civilian spur, these fixed button spurs have been recovered in countless civil war camps and battlefields, predominately in Confederate areas of occupation. It's a well known fact that General Robert E. Lee wore a pair of fixed button spurs throughout the war. I don't have an excavation location for this one, but most likely it was recovered from a Confederate camp or battle position. If you are a collector of excavated Confederate items this spur will fit in nicely!
